Twinkle, Tinsel, Tinky and Sparkle: The Fairies!
For seven years The Fairies stomped all over London and beyond, both as a wish granting, mayhem causing fairy gang, and as The Fairies Band where raucous music and good times ensued.
The Fairies had a message, believe in your dreams, don't let cynicism beat you down, get back up again when you fall, if you don't believe in your dreams...who will? And this was all accompanied with the little pink wish vouchers, the squeezing of the arms to grant the wishes and the glitter, high heels, hotpants and leather jackets.
People, strangers even, used to buy the Fairies fairy related presents, they would be interviewed on TV and in magazines, they would go on tour with their band and meet lots of incredible people along the way.
But it wasn't all nice, and some people would actually HATE The Fairies. They would get spat at, their wings would be set alight, they would be verbally abused in the street by strangers. It was a world of extremes in terms of the response the fairies would get both from people they knew and people they had never met before.
Twinkle and Tinsel used to document these responses as part of their art degrees. When they graduated, their final degree shows were an amalgamation of all they had collected, the articles, the presents, the stories of burnt wings, the abusive comments. Film, photography, sound, collections, objects were all used as part of the final exhibition. Their degree shows were identical and held simultaneously in Goldsmiths College and Kingston University.
For years after university finished The Fairies carried on with their work, the band did two tours in New York, singles were put out on various indie labels like Filthy Little Angels and the four Fairies had a retrospective of their Fairy lives in the Tom Tom gallery in Covent Garden in London. The wings may now be invisible, but the fairyness lives on in them all.
