Art Sale for Margate Independent Food Bank
‘Make a donation, take a piece of art’
Saturday 14th November, 11am – 1pm, Joseph Wales Studios, 2 Dane Hill, Margate CT9 1QP
Artists from across the UK, including the Hebrides, Glasgow, the Midlands, London, Margate and more, have donated works to an art sale which will raise vital funds for Margate Independent Foodbank.
Margate is one of the UKs most deprived towns, with high levels of child poverty and unemployment. Since the COVID crisis, local food banks have seen a steep increase in the need for their support, with the Margate Independent Foodbank now giving out over 220 bags of food a week, up from 105 bags a week when they were first established in June. Their monthly costs have spiraled from £1200 per month to £4000 per month, and at the same time government emergency COVID funding for food banks has just come to an end.
This is the third art sale in Margate this year, organised by local artist Twinkle Troughton. The first two sales were held in Twinkle’s front garden, with a handful of artists and neighbours also getting involved, helping to raise £2500.
This time however, thanks to the incredible response from artists to a call out on social media, there is too much art for a front garden sale, so the event will be indoors at Joseph Wales Studios, a warehouse space that comprises of artists’ studios and two gallery spaces.
To make the event open to all, including those who don’t usually have spare cash to spend on art, there are no price tags on any of the works. The premise of the sale is to simply make a donation, take a piece of art. In previous sales, people have donated anything from a few quid to £250.
There won’t be any announcements on what individual artworks raise, all the money goes in to one pot and the sum total is the collective effort of all the artists involved. All proceeds will go to the food bank.
Contributing artists are: Abigail Lipski, Adrian Lloyd, Amanda Priestly, Angela Wooi, Cecilia Bonilla, Corinna Spencer, David Troughton, Eleanor Marriott, Emily Roberts, Harriet Smith, Jad Oakes, Jade Sprankenstein, Julia Hamilton, Kellie Hogben, Luke Silva, Megan Metcalf, Melanie Tong, Nadine Mahony, Natascha Maksimovic, Nyree Troughton, Ruth Batham, Sadie Hennessey, Sam Jackson, Sally Jones, Tinsel Edwards, Triston Wallace, Twinkle Troughton, Vernon Lintern, Zoe Dickey
